2008 MS Girls Basketball (4/5/6th)
March 2: Park Tudor (I.I.S.L)
To sum it up of all of our 5/6th girls 2008-09 basketball season...it's been real fun and learning experience. Again and again, we missed too many easy baskets even though after the game two referees asked about what happened with our too many close baskets. If we made more baskets, our record would be so much better than indicated and go far in IISL tourney play.
Good luck and thanks for being on the team to 6th graders Taisha Crowell, Nataly Fonseca, JamiLee Hoglind, Dara Levy, and Lia Mast as they move on to the 7/8th squad next year.
Thanks to 5th graders Shani Resch, Brittany Skjeveland, and Victoria Tingler for being on the team. It will be an exciting moment to watch next season since we are considered to be a "fast team" with upcoming 4th grade girls who sported a 7-0-1 record in "5th quarter" play. Until then, Coaches Pulga-Curtis and Smith
February 24 St. Richard
February 23: Traders Point (I.I.S.L)
Coach Smith told the girls "it's do or die" about this game for our first IISL tourney play. The girls really showed that in their hearts they wanted to continue their season by playing next Monday at Park Tudor for the next IISL tourney round. The girls improved to break the press that carried us to a victory in a real THRILLER THRILLER OVERTIME game. We were down 2-10 at the beginning of the game. Thanks to you, the greatest fans in the world for ongoing supporting us!
We will play at St. Richard today for our last regular season game. The girls will continue practicing this week (Wed. and Thurs.) to save our season by defeating Trader Point. Two of our players scored 8 points each in the game to lead ISD. February 19: Traders Point
We could not overcome their full court press as we need to learn how to control their press better. We need to calm down from making too many turnovers, otherwise we will do fine. We also shot 1 out of 11 free throws. We will play our last regular game at St. Richard this coming Tuesday after the IISL tourney starts on Monday.
February 17: Kingsway Christian
We gave them 30 free throw attempts and they made only 6. We escaped a narrow victory making three in a row. One of their players scored 14 in the first half, then we set up a box and one defense. We stopped her to only a basket in the second half. We were down 10 to 16 by halftime and roared back in the second half. One of our players led all scorers with 13 points followed by another two players with 4 apiece. We are to play at Trader Point Thursday. We defeated them by two the last time we played them in January.
February 12: St. Richard's
A nice CLOSURE for us with a win at home. We hope to play again at home for the IISL tournament but more than likely may not. One of our players led all scorers with 9 points. TWO wins in a row is a first time for us! We will play at St. Richard again in two weeks. Our next three games will be away games 2/17 @ Kingsway, 2/19 @ Trader Point, and 2/24 @ St. Richard. Only three 4th grade girls were in uniform and they made contributions to this game.
February 11: International
Our losing streak has been snapped with a convincing win over International. We also surpassed the win column from last year. Two of our players scored double figures with 15 and 10. The girls needed this win to gain their confidence to continue playing better for the next two weeks away games before the IISL tourney starts. We will play St. Richard today at our home court. It is probably our "last home game". Come and root for our girls for our 4th win of the year.
February 5: Sycamore
We led 12-11 at halftime. It was a see-saw game all the way until the start of the 4th quarter with a tied score of 21-21. The girls apparently ran out of gas and foul troubles got to us. We had one player who scored a career high of 7 points. Another player scored a game high of 9 points. The girls played their hearts out. We were hoping to win for the 3rd time on Wednesday playing International at home (not away) as scheduled.
February 4: Park Tudor
When will we ever stop our losing streak? It is now FIVE. One of our players got a high 10 points including a three pointer. We were down 11-18 during halftime. We scored another half 11 points in second half but it still was not enough. We gave PT too many close baskets. We stayed in the game by less double digits most of the time. We will play again Thursday at home with Sycamore.
January 29: Bethesda Christian
Injuries, health, and foul problems continued to plague our girls but the 4th grade girls stepped in and made a difference. One of our players shot 2 straight treys in the final minutes to pull within two. The girls got the golden opportunity to play in Caskey gym. It was our 4th loss in a row but the girls did great in the game that really satisfied the coaches in different ways.
The 4th graders playing the 5th quarter continued their winning a streak with 12-2 romp over Bethesda to raise to a 6-0-1 record. We will play at Park Tudor Wednesday and Sycamore at home Thursday.
January 21: Orchard
Nothing went our way at the beginning of the game. The girls thought that the basketball goal was higher than they had seen before. Coach laughed and explained that their ceiling is lower making the goal look higher. The girls had their first road trip of the year. We were down 0-12 in the first quarter. The halftime score was 4-15. Only two of our players scored. We need to work more on rebounding and drive aggressively to the basket. Our next game will be a home again vs. Bethesda on Jan. 29th.
January 14: St. John Lutheran
A very heartbreaking loss for the girls. We led 20-15 with 2 minutes left. Our two girls got fouled out earlier and another girl was injured. We could not keep the lead. That's one of our goals is to practice on how to hold the ball instead of shooting the ball or getting ourselves into more fouls. We will travel to Orchard for our first road trip after 6 straight games playing at home. 4th grade girls scored 14 points in only 6 minutes of running time nonstop in the "5th quarter" and defeated them 14-2. Their record now is "5-0-1".
January 13: Orchard
We stayed in the game so closely at 14-16 into late into the 4th quarter, but we basically lost it when they got a 9-0 run in the closing minutes. They attempted 26 free throws compared to only 5 for us. We play St. John Lutheran Wednesday. 4th grade girls have a record of 4-0-1 and continued their undefeated play in the "5th quarter" with a score of 2-0.
January 7: Traders Point
We are staying on top in the with Indianapolis Independent School League with a 2-0 record. All girls got the opportunity to score except for one...one of our key players was out with an injury...one player stepped up by getting 16 points that secured our second victory of the season. We were down 17-25 going into 4th quarter. Coach Smith had to be a fierce cheerleader and the girls rallied back in the 4th quarter and won in an overtime thriller. 4th grade girls team got tied 2-2. We will play at home against the well known basketball program Orchard on Tuesday Jan.13th at home. Come and root for the girls!
December 18: Trinity Lutheran
We could not stop one of their best point guards who scored 12 points, even though we used three different players using box and one defense. There must be some kind of glass on the basket since we still missed too many close shots. 4th grade girls continued their excellent 5th quarter playing and won 6-0. We will resume playing our next game on January 7, Wednesday at home vs Trader Point.
December 11: International
No, it is not a print error. Our 8 girls played a well-balanced game and 5 players scored. We led 17-0 at halftime. They finally got a point near the end of the game by a free throw. Our 4th grade girls won the 5th quarter contest with a score of 4-0 for only 6 minutes non stop running time. Next game: Trinity Lutheran at home on Thursday, Dec. 18. They defeated us by one (19-20) last year.
December 9: Calvary Lutheran
The girls did a remarkable job playing their very first game of the year vs Calvary Lutheran at KRC gym. We were tied 10-10 going into halftime and 18-18 going into the 4th quarter. Our girls began to run out of gas and one of our key players was fouled out before the 4th quarter. We could not hang on and lost 22 to 28 or are we just like the Indiana Pacers? We missed countless easy and close baskets. Coaches are happy that the girls got a chance to shoot plenty to gain experience and confidence during their journey to High School.
4th graders played the 5th quarter and won 6-4 behind our several fast breaks and smart passing plays.
We will host International today.
