2009 MS Girls Basketball (7 & 8)

December 7th: Trinity Lutheran

Monday, December 7 was the first game for the 7/8 Grade Middle School Lady Deaf Hoosiers.  With limited practice time and the cold and flu bug wreaking havoc among players over the past weeks, the team set out to do it’s best.  Before the game started, along with the reviewing the plays and skills that the team practiced, Coach Fetzer emphasized three things to the players:  play hard, play smart and have fun.  There were many positives that were seen during the game.  With more practice and more game experience, the 7/8 Grade Lady Deaf Hoosiers will continue to improve.

December 8th: Calvary Lutheran

ISD Middle School 7/8 Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveled to the microscopic confines of Calvary Lutheran gymnasium on Tuesday, December 8.  The court was about half the size of the ISD Middle School’s KRC basketball court. In just their second game of the season, ISD played hard through each of the four quarters, showing strong woman-to-woman defense that caused quite a few Calvary Lutheran turnovers.  Calvary Lutheran had a few big players and played a very physical type of basketball that stifled ISD’s offense in the first quarter.  This was in stark contrast to their first game against Trinity Lutheran the day before.  In midst of the thrashing, bumping and pushing, the Lady Deaf Hoosiers kept their cool, causing frustration for many of their opponents and causing them to foul.  In the end, Calvary Lutheran came out on top.  What a huge improvement for the Lady Deaf Hoosiers from game 1 to game 2!   Keep it up!

January 6th: Trader Point

ISD Middle School 7/8 Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveled to the Trader Point Academy in Whitestown, Indiana for their third game of the season and the first game coming back after ISD’s two-week Christmas recess.  With only six Deaf Hoosiers able to play the game, “aggressive - but cautious defense” was emphasized from the coaches before the tip-off.  The team couldn’t afford to make careless fouls.  The game was high-paced with all the players running hard and giving their best.  There are bright spots from Deaf Hoosier players within each game.  There are also areas the team needs to work on to improve.  The team will continue to work hard during practices and stay on a positive track.  We look forward to seeing you at one of games next week.

January 11th: Greenwood Christian Academy

ISD Middle School 7/8 Lady Deaf Hoosiers won their first game of the season against Greenwood Christian Academy on Monday, January 11 in Greenwood.  With only six ISD players available, the Lady Deaf Hoosiers hoopsters showed their hustle and desire, out rebounding GCA by a huge margin throughout the game.  Along with that, ISD had a tenacious woman-woman defense that created many GCA turnovers, leading to points.  Way to go, ladies, on a nice win!

January 12th: Orchard

ISD Middle School 7/8 Lady Deaf Hoosiers continued “playing out of their suitcases” as they traveled Springmill Road to visit the Owls of The Orchard School.  The tempo was fast-paced as ISD continued working its hard-nosed, up-tempo woman-woman defense.  The Lady Deaf Hoosiers’ aggressive defensive style caused more than 20 Owl turnovers during the game.  That was something that was shocking to the team in yellow.  Under the glass, ISD continued to improve its rebounding numbers both on offense and defense, as well as improving its ability to score.  However, Orchard had 15 players from which to substitute.  The Lady Deaf Hoosiers’  intensity throughout the game should be recognized and applauded.  Our “iron women” team played the game with only six, but never slowed down or gave in. In the end, the Owls came out on top.

January 12th: Orchard

We played St. John Lutheran and for various reasons we had five girls to play.   St. John’s was pretty quick and the refs were the sort who called little fouls, so one of the girls ended up with three fouls by the middle of the second quarter.  Two others of ours had two and the other two players had one foul each.  I called a time out when she picked up her third and we switched to a 2-3 zone, hoping that would make us less “foul-prone.”   Later I saw that we were still too aggressive with our transition defense.  I called another 30 second time out to tell them to slow it down and be a little less aggressive, as we couldn’t afford any  more fouls.  About a minute after that, a couple of our girls  were going after a defensive rebound and knocked heads.  One of the girls cut the inside of her lip and got ice for it.  The other girl continued feeling dizzy.   After talking with the refs and the other coach – and with only three players left, I decided we had to forfeit the game.

January 13th: St. John Lutheran

ISD Middle School 7/8 Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveled to St. John’s Lutheran school with only five players able to play.  It was a fast-paced game as both teams had defenses that moved pretty quick.  Both teams picked up early fouls.  In the second quarter, the Lady Deaf Hoosiers switched to a zone defense to try to prevent further fouls.  In the middle of the second quarter, two ISD players were diving for a loose ball and smacked heads.  Both were unable to continue playing and St. John’s won by forfeit.  Fortunately both girls’ injuries were not severe and will be able to continue the season.  Another bit of good news is that the team has picked up two additional players who will help round out the  roster to eight players.  The team’s next game is at home on February 3rd vs. Park Tudor.  We hope to see you there!
