December 15: City Meet @ Howe Academy
Howe Academy hosted the Wrestling City Meet last Saturday, and 13 city teams showed up with their best wrestlers in an attempt to win the city title. Teams included ISD (1A), Arlington (4A), Broad Ripple (4A), Cathedral (4A), Chatard (3A), Arsenal Tech (4A), Manual (4A), Northwest (3A), Scecina (2A), Howe (2A), Indiana Blind (1A), Ritter (2A), and Washington (3A). ISD brought boys filling up 12 of 14 possible weight classes, hoping to improve on last year’s 6th place finish. The team succeeded in doing that, doing absolutely fantastic and exceeding coaches’ expectations, placing 2nd right behind city champions Cathedral.
The Indianapolis Star ran an article Sunday lauding ISD wrestlers.
At one end of the Howe gymnasium, Mike Paulone and a group of smiling, sweaty wrestlers posed for pictures.
Calling them happy would be an understatement.
Indiana Deaf, with 49 boys in the high school, pulled off a stunning feat in the City wrestling tournament, finishing second to perennial winner Cathedral.
The Deaf Hoosiers scored 182 points in the 13-school event.
"It's beautiful," Paulone, ISD's coach, said through an interpreter. "The boys persevered through the day. There are a lot of good wrestlers. We had a lot of good wins. The boys believed in each other and had the heart to do this."
Indiana Deaf, the defending deaf school national champion, placed sixth last year. Paulone told his team it could better that this year, but he said he never expected such a small school could finish second.
"We don't have a lot of boys to choose from, but the boys gave us everything they have, and as coaches we appreciate that," Paulone said. "The boys gave us their hearts."
Jamie Johnson (285 pounds), Corey Burton (215) and Colin Analco (125) led Indiana Deaf with second-place finishes. Johnson wrestled one of the closest matches of the day, falling 2-0 to Manual's Ishmale Hinton, who captured his third championship.
The referees and tournament coordinators were very impressed with how respectful ISD wrestlers were on and off the mat. This tournament definitely marked a high point in ISD’s season, and the coaches look forward to continuing their success throughout the remainder of the season.
Team scores: Cathedral (369.5), Indiana Deaf (182), Bishop Chatard (175.5), Tech (167.5), Arlington (124), Manual (199), Northwest (111), Scecina (103), Broad Ripple (91.5), Ritter (80), Howe (78), Washington (37), Indiana Blind (21).

December 6: Speedway
Yesterday, ISD wrestled against Speedway High School (2A) and won 54 to 30. It was also a bittersweet victory after we lost to them 45 to 39 last year. Last year the only loss was against Speedway. The team record now last year was 17 wins and 1 loss. The current team record is 7 win and 1 loss and we are on the way to being the National Deaf Champions again! December 4: Cardinal Ritter
Last Tuesday, the ISD wrestling team beat Ritter (remember the sectional football game???) by the score of 55 to 10. The second floor in the Caskey was packed with fans cheering our boys’ win after win on the mat. It was a bittersweet victory for ISD. December 1: Cambridge City Lincoln Invitational
Last Saturday there was a wrestling invite held at Cambridge City Lincoln High School with six teams participating: Centerville, Eastern Hancock, Blue River, Daleville, Cambridge City Lincoln, and ISD. Heartbreakingly, we came in the 2nd place losing to a tournament victor, Centerville, with the score of 42 to 39, with a pin in less than a second (.09) left.
The ISD wrestlers earned the MVP medals in their respective weight classes with the undefeated records of 5-0 and they were Michael Garman, Tony Slone, Chasz Jordan, Mark Alcozer, Corey Burton and Jamie Winslow-Johnson. The coaches selected Corey Burton as the MVP of the tournament.
Justin Hernandez and Robert Goolsby won 4 and lost one in the tournament. The rest of the team: Tyler West, Colin Analco, Jose Mast, and Will Fetzer won at least 2 or more matches. Unfortunately, we did not bring the championship trophy home; though, it was a good day for all of us. The coaches and parents were proud of our boys. Also, we want to thank the ISD teacher, Sharon Baker and her friend, Steve, for inviting us to eat good dinner at their restaurant. November 20: Northwest
The ISD wrestling team won the match with Northwest High School (4A) 55 to 24. Several boys have elected to wrestle in the upper one or two class weights and won the individual matches. It was amazing to see the boys have come a long way to become excellent ISD grapplers.
